16 Data Visualization Vendors are squared

Since Gartner keeps doing its "Magic Quadrant" (MQ; see MQ at the very bottom of this post) for Business Intelligence Platforms every year, it forces me to do my

"Yellow Square for DV, 2012"

for Data Visualization (DV) Platforms too. I did it last year and I have to do it again because I disagreed with Gartner in 2011 and I disagree with it again in 2012. I have a few different (from Gartner) views, but I will mention 3.

1. There is no such thing as Business Intelligence as a software platform. It is a marketing term, used as an umbrella for multiple technologies and market segments. Gartner released its MQ for BI at the same time it had "BI Summit 2012" in London on which it practically acknowledged that BI is not a correct term and suggested to use the term "Business Analytics" instead, see for example this article: http://timoelliott.com/blog/2012/02/what-i-found-interesting-about-gartner-bi-summit-2012-london.html

2. I personally is using - for many years - the term Data Visualization as a replacement for BI, as much more specific. Because of that, I removed from consideration a few vendors present in Gartner's MQ for BI and added a few important DV vendors.

3. I used for my assessment 3 groups of criterias, which I already used on this blog before, for example here:

http://apandre.wordpress.com/2011/12/18/dv-comparison-2011/

and here:

http://apandre.wordpress.com/tools/comparison/

As a result, I got a very different from Gartner the placement of "Data Visualization Platforms and their vendors":

.

For reference purposes please see below the Magic Quadrant for BI, published by Gartner this month. As you can see our lists of Vendors are overlapping by 11 companies, but in my opinion their relative positioning is very different:

    Hi Geoffrey:

as I mentioned, I used 3 groups of criterias here:
    http://apandre.wordpress.com/2011/12/18/dv-comparison-2011/
and I used the 3rd group for colors.

For example Microsoft has total score in 3rd group as 81 and Qliktech/Qlikview has 48...

    Hi Geoffrey:

I like Omniscope (main product of Visokio) with at least one exception: it is written in Java and I wrote about it in 2011 here:
    http://apandre.wordpress.com/2011/10/01/omniscope/
Visokio is a small UK company with talented people. Functionality of Omniscope is advanced and I can recommended it for those who does not need to handle "big data"

  5. Hi Andrei,

obviously different evaluation criteria can result in different rankings/results. Gartner's criteria seem to be more business-centric: ability to execute = f(product/service, overall viability, sales execution/pricing, market responsiveness, execution, track record, customer experience, operations); Completeness of vision = f(maker understanding, marketing/sales strategy,Business model, Vertical/industry/geography strategy, innovation).

Your criteria are much more specific and technology-centric (like 64bit desktop client or multidimensional cubes). I also like the term Data Visualization better, but it's clearly only a part of the umbrella term Business Analytics. For example, you can do a lot in predictive analytics and decision support without DV, or at least without having to rely on DV for (human) decision makers.

Back to your "Yellow Square for DV, 2012": I noticed the "leaders" in Tableau, QlikView, Spotfire(TIBCO). I did a time series of Gartner's Magic Quadrant on BI with the data of the last 5 years (2008-2012) all in one interactive chart (done in Tableau Public). It reveals those three with strong improvements in their execution over the last 3 years (i.e. vertical trajectory in the MQ).

Over the years you may consider a similar DV for your Yellow Square...

    Regards, Thomas.

  7. Hi Andrei,

Srini's reference on linked in brought me to your blog. This looks very interesting. I would like to request you to visit www.ideal-analytics.com. This is a self-service, ad-hoc, on-demand BI tool. We would be grateful if you can have a look at the product and share your insights in the form of feedback. We would be happy to run you through a demo of the application and give you a trial account access so you can explore the application at your end. Any input from your end will be most helpful.

Look forward to a response from your end.

    Regards,
    Yamika

  9. I'm interested in the market data (market share) of the companies that operate in Data Visualization and Dashboard segments. Could u please help me to know as to where can I get the data from? Thank you.

  10. Excellent analysis. I personally disagree with the Gartner publication also, it seems to be biased by the commercial presence of the tools. For me the best possible BI tool would be the lovely son of Tableu + Omniscope, those tools together can tackle absolutely any type of business analysis. I only use those tools and personally, I have never required anything else. I am now a follower of your blog which is excellent, I've just found it!! :)
